Yes — that’s the Saver’s Match (the new federal retirement match that replaces the old Saver’s Credit)

Starts with 2027 contributions. You claim it when you file your 2027 tax return in 2028. Nothing applies to contributions you make in 2026.

The government matches up to 50% of the first $2,000 you contribute to a qualifying retirement account → maximum $1,000 per person per year (so up to $2,000 for a married couple if both qualify).

The match is deposited directly into your retirement account (401(k), 403(b), governmental 457(b), traditional or Roth IRA, etc.). It is not just a tax credit that reduces what you owe.

Basic eligibility requirements

  • At least 18 by the end of the tax year
  • Not a full-time student
  • Not claimed as a dependent on someone else’s return
  •  U.S. resident for tax purposes
  • Make a contribution to an eligible plan/IRA (there is no minimum amount)
